Freed's Furniture was founded by David Freed in 1938. An immigrant from Russia and a cabinet builder by trade, Dave leased a building on Elm Street (known as "Deep Ellum") in downtown Dallas. The former tenant was a company called National Furniture Company, which became the original name of Freed's, as Dave could not afford a new sign!Eventually, Dave and Eva Freed's sons, Bernard and Joe, along with their son-in-law, Aaron Klausner, joined Dave in his business. With the help and determination of Bernard, Aaron and Joe, the business grew and moved north from Elm Street; first to the corner of Greenville and Ross Avenue in the 1950's, and then to the corner of Greenville and Northwest Highway in 1961. Freed's successfully operated from the Northwest Highway location for nearly 30 years. In 1974, the family acquired a facility on LBJ at Midway Road. The company thrived from 1974 until 1991 as Joe Freed, the radio spokesperson for the company, became known as Joe "No-Interest " Freed. In 1991, Joe's son Howard leased the location from his family, and created a new entity... Freed's Homefurnishings.Howard's vision was to create a furniture store that offered quality merchandise with stylish, high-end designs at affordable prices. The company adopted the slogan "You Can Afford Your Dreams" and tries to live up to that message with everything it sells.AMENITYLargest Furniture Showroom in the Metroplex. We recently purchased over $10,000 of furniture from this company. After shopping around the Dallas area, we chose Freeds because of their local manufacturing, quick delivery, and value for the money. We ended up furnishing 3 bedrooms and bought a dozen pieces. Our sales person was very nice and he was quick to respond to us when we had questions. We had one major issue with our furniture. We ordered some pieces from another distributor through Freed's (a.k.a. - a "special order"). Special order furniture is not displayed on the floor, you have to take your best guess on fit, look, and quality (you are only shown pictures in a catalog). Since we had taken measurements prior to shopping, we looked up the measurements of the furniture piece in the distributor's catalog and confirmed that it would fit our needs. Our sales person also reassured us that it would fit. When the piece was delivered, we discovered that the measurement in the catalog was incorrect, and it did not fit. We then called our sales person, expecting to be able to return it. We were dismayed to find that under no circumstances would they allow a "special order" return. We escalated our issue to Mr. Freed and were told that a return was impossible. We explained that we had 3 more rooms to furnish and would be willing to exchange the item and purchase more furniture from them, if only they would take back this $200 item. However, they refused to work with us. Our sales person even stopped returning our phone calls. We furnished the rest of our house with another furniture vendor and will not look back. The Freeds furniture is beautiful, and we are pretty satisfied with our purchases and the quality of the delivery service. Each piece was hand-delivered and assembled in our house. For those of you wishing to move forward with Freeds - just be cautious. Always remember to take measurements before you shop, and under NO circumstances should you place a "special order". You will not be able to return it!
